Fox implies that only Black people vote illegally
May 15, 2007
It is no secret that I do not like Fox News. Well, they gave me another reason yesterday.
Watch this segment talking about the possibility of double-voting in South Carolina (voting in each party’s primary election):
Notice anything strange? TPM Cafe (great site) saw the same thing I did when they watched the above video: not a single non-Black person in the segment. I guess all the people that live and vote in SC are Black.
You may think I’m nitpicking here, but this is important because it is an example of the media’s ability to influence perception. The subliminal message that can be gleaned from this story is: be suspicious of a Black voter when they go to a polling place on primary election day. What if this is the mentality of the people working the polling places on that day? That spells trouble and unwarranted scrutiny for Black voters. Conversely, and more sinister as well, is the fact that this story implicitly communicates a message of trust of white voters by omitting their presence from the video. You cannot convince me that this was not deliberate. On TV, nothing is shown accidentally.
People, I implore you to give serious thought to the images that we consume on TV, radio, online, and everywhere else. There is often more there than the obvious, so pay close attention.
One Love. One II.
