The CBC is a trip

May 23, 2007

Check this out, “Twenty-six members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) have signed letters to Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and former Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) urging them to reconsider their decisions to skip a debate cosponsored by the CBC Institute and Fox News.”

In the interests of full disclosure, The SuperSpade is working in coalition with ColorofChange.org to urge the CBC Institute to end their partnership with Fox along with pressuring Democratic candidates to not participate in the CBC Institute/Fox debate.

The part I don’t understand is when Bennie Thompson said that “the CBC Institute, not Fox, would set the debate format and select the questions to be asked. He said Fox merely will broadcast the event.” The fact is that what matters much more than the actual debate are the sound bites and “fair and balanced” analysis of who won, lost, and why.

All we have to do is go back to the Republican debate when I thought Ron Paul hit a home run when he said, “They attack us because we’ve been over there. We’ve been bombing Iraq for 10 years. We’ve been in the Middle East [for years]. I think (Ronald) Reagan was right. We don’t understand the irrationality of Middle Eastern politics. Right now, we’re building an embassy in Iraq that is bigger than the Vatican. We’re building 14 permanent bases. What would we say here if China was doing this in our country or in the Gulf of Mexico? We would be objecting.”

But the unofficial winner of the debate was Rudy Giuliani who angrily retorted, “That’s really an extraordinary statement. That’s really an extraordinary statement, as someone who lived through the attack of Sept. 11 that we invited the attack because we were attacking Iraq. I don’t think I have ever heard that before and I have heard some pretty absurd explanations for Sept. 11. I would ask the congressman withdraw that comment and tell us that he didn’t really mean that.”

You see the difference here? Ron Paul = factual and logical. Rudy Giuliani = baseless spin. So if Fox news treats the GOP in this way, why should we expect anything more if the Democrats are on stage? Am I crazy to think this way?

Nevertheless, please put make your voice known by signing the petition at ColorofChange.org.

Stay up fam,

Brandon Q.

    Hey Brandon,

Keep on keeping on brother. I am a person born to middle class white skin privelege but came over the years to understand and accept African American leadership in this country and the BCC was always a toucstone to me for what was going on in congress. They were allways faithfull to the needs and dreams of Afro-Americans but the programs they supported and fought for were actually in the best interests of all Americans and most especially the working class.

My leaders have for a long time been Malcolm X, Mohammed Ali, Jesse Jackson, Martin Luther King and man other Arican-American men and women.

    Thanks Pat and Joseph,

Joseph, I appreciate your candor in first recognizing your privelege but going further to reject traditional Black leadership tokenism in better understanding the Black community. Please don’t be a stranger to The SuperSpade.

    Pat,
Thanks for the comment. What other issues are of interest to you?

Got something to say?
